IGNOU MA Sociology admission process will start soon for the January 2026 academic session. MA Sociology is a 02 year postgraduate level programme, which is recognised and approved by UGC. The total programme fee is INR 14,600 without registration fee and development fee. Students with having bachelor’s degree are eligible and can apply for admission through the official IGNOU website. Admission starting date has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be December 15, 2025*. In IGNOU, MA Sociology Programme aims to address various emerging concerns of sociology, and prepare students for emerging societal challenges. The medium of instruction in which the course is delivered is English and Hindi.

MA Sociology Programme offered by IGNOU is a postgraduate programme with a course duration of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. It is designed to provide advanced sociological knowledge and skills to its students especially to those residing in remote and inaccessible areas. In this programme, students learn about classical and advanced concepts & theories, social issues of development, research methods & perspectives, education transnation communities. Other topics it covers include urbanization, migration, population development and other emerging concerns of contemporary society.

IGNOU MA Sociology admission will begin soon for the January 2026 academic year. Students clearing eligibility criteria can start applying through University’s official website. They need to pay a registration fee as well as it is compulsory to proceed further with your application status. Admission procedure is completely online and the course is instructed through Open Distance Learning mode. Students need to go to university only for assignment submission and Term End Examination. The expected date of admission starting is 15 December 2025.

Those students who are interested in getting a postgraduate degree in Sociology from IGNOU must pass its eligibility criteria. Every interested student should have a bachelor’s degree or higher degree from a recognized university or its equivalent. DEB ID is another eligibility that is mandatory to fulfill if any student is applying for an Online or ODL programme. Create one before filling application form. Students can apply either by authorized IGNOU website or directly through the admission portal.

MA Sociology fee at IGNOU is reasonable and budget friendly. IGNOU has additional fees to pay as development fee and registration fee. It must be noted that registration fee will not be refunded in any case. Students who belong to reserved category get a relaxation and have to pay INR 150 as registration fee. Students from general category need to pay INR 300 as registration fee.

• Step 1: Visit official IGNOU website and apply for ODL Programmes. You can also directly go to the admission portal.
• Step 2: Create a new account by registering as a new user. After successful registration, you will receive credentials which include username and password on your email account.
• Step 3: Now access your application form and select an interested course.
• Step 4: Start filling forms with required information related to personal details and academic qualifications.
• Step 5: Upload scanned copy of all the relevant documents.
• Step 6: Preview your application form before final submission to check for mistakes. Then, pay applicable fees and submit form online.
• Step 7: Post Application Submission: After you submit your application form and receive confirmation by mail, wait for 10 to 30 working days. The university will check and verify everything. Once verified, you will receive admission confirmation mail.

Evaluation System For IGNOU MA Sociology Programme

IGNOU has a different kind of evaluation system from other Universities. It’s evaluation is divided into two components, mainly through Internal Assignments and Term End Examination (TEE). Assignments consist of 30% marks and TEE consists of 705 marks of final Result. Assignment is a mandatory component of evaluation and is important to be submitted by students before their TEE starts as they will not be allowed to appear for TEE exams. Assignments are submitted at dedicated study centres to which they are attached and the TEE examination is conducted at the examination centre the student chooses.
